Rosa rugosa Alba, otherwise known as White Japanese Rose, is an upright, fast growing deciduous hedge rose that flowers for most of the summer, with thorny stems and shiny, bright-green, wrinkled foliage. Large, papery, pure white flowers with yellow centres are borne from light pink buds from June to September. The heavily-scented flowers are followed by large round, reddish-orange hips in early autumn. Rosa rugosa Alba grows well in mixed borders, hedges, and as a specimen. It is tolerant of harsh conditions, including salt spray, wind, and poor soil.
