What to Look for in a Hummingbird Feeder
Selection and Placement of Feeders
A steady and ample flow of nectar serves both the hummingbird and the
hummingbird lover well. Hummers are fearless and bold in returning to the
nectar source and we are rewarded with watching their antics and steady
visitation to our feeders (especially if they are strategically placed near
somewhere that you can sit and watch!) Humming Birds will feed at any feeder
that allows them space to maneuver and provides openings for their bills.
Consider these design features:
With and without perches -
Hummingbirds don’t need to perch to feed. They are excellent flyers and their
hovering ability allows them to feed without stopping. But feeders with
perches allow these little birds to slow down, rest and be observed for a few
seconds longer. If you enjoy photographing these little jewels, you may find
the extra time spent at your feeder while perched may give you an opportunity
for a few more snapshots.
Capacity - make sure your feeder can hold a
sufficient amount of nectar to feed the number of birds you attract.
Visibility - for the birds and for you! Out
of direct sunlight - as too much sun can cause the solution to spoil.
And don’t forget a secure hanger.
