How to Make Hummingbird Nectar
Making Sugar-Water For Hummingbirds
There are a lot of different recipes for hummingbird food. But the best
formula is one part sugar to four parts water. Do not substitute honey, which
spoils and contains a bacteria that causes a fatal fungal disease of the
tongue. Do not use artificial sweeteners as they provide no calories. Do not
use food coloring. To make the nectar, stir sugar and water over low heat and
bring to a rolling boil for two minutes. Boiling kills bacteria and mold
spores and reduces the chemicals added to our drinking water. Avoid over
boiling which can make the solution too strong. Cool the solution before
filling feeders. Extra “nectar” may be stored in the refrigerator.
