How to Attract Hummingbirds
Placing feeders in your garden is a wonderful way to nourish
hummers. But unless you have flowers that will attract our little jewels, they
may not find your feeders for a long time. So begin by attracting them
naturally, with flowers. Hummingbirds feed on bright, vibrant flowers with a
tubular shape to fit the hummingbird’s bill. And don’t limit yourself to
flowers, hummers feast on many shrubs and trees, too. In the life of a
hummingbird nothing says nectar more than the color red. They will gladly
examine flowers of other colors and take their nectar, but red flowers are a
powerful draw.
Flower variety is another key to attracting hummingbirds.
Offer annuals such as Larkspur, Phlox, Begonia, Impatients, Petunias,
Pineapple Sage, Texas Sage or Scarlet Sage. Vines like Nasturtium, Red Morning
Glory, Scarlet Trumpet Honeysuckle, Canary Creeper, Cross Vine or Trumpet
Creeper. Trees and shrubs provide food and shelter. Consider Citrus, Cape
Honeysuckle, Desert Willow, Weigela, Flowering Quince and Beauty Bush.
